Kids clothing and shoe size chart

European clothing sizes are heights in centimetres, US sizes are roughly ages, and UK sizes sit somewhere between. This chart lines the three up, and the shoe sizes are ordered by foot length, the one thing you can measure at home. Enter a height or a foot length and the matching row is highlighted.

Why a European size is a height

EN 13402 labels children's clothing by body height in centimetres, in steps of 6 cm: 86, 92, 98 and so on. So the most accurate way to pick a size is to measure the child, not to guess from age. A three-year-old can be 92 or 104, and both are perfectly normal.

Why a US 4T is not an EU 4

US and UK sizes are built on an approximate age (2T, 3T, 4 to 5 years), not on height. They are handy in a shop, but they assume an average child; anyone taller or shorter than average falls between them. The chart converts by the height range each label is aimed at, which is why the 104 to 110 cm row is a US 5 and a UK 4 to 5 years.

How to measure a foot at home

Stand on a sheet of paper, barefoot, with weight on the foot, and mark the heel and the tip of the longest toe. Measure the distance in centimetres, for both feet, and take the larger. The chart gives the smallest size that fits that length according to the Clarks fit guide; brands differ by up to a full size, so it is a starting point.

How often to check

Up to age three a foot grows about half a size every two to three months; from age four, every four to six months. A shoe that is too small does not necessarily hurt, and small children do not always say. Check with a thumb at the toe, and in the app note the purchase date next to each size so you know when it is getting old.
